What is Type Ride?

A frantic typing-based tower defense deckbuilder that trades surgical strategy for high-speed keyboard chaos.

Imagine if a typing tutor had a baby with a tower defense roguelike. You're racing to the finish line, summoning a colorful cast of Ink Monsters by typing words instead of clicking cards. It's a weird, high-energy twist on the deckbuilder genre that'll actually make your heart race.

Gameplay

You're racing along on a ride, and instead of clicking cards, you're typing words to summon Ink Monsters. It's a wild mashup of a typing tutor and a tower defense roguelike where your keyboard is the actual combat controller. The core loop clicks because of the tension between typing speed and unit power. You've gotta build a deck that balances heavy hitters—which take longer to type and risk a breach—with fast, weak units that keep the line from collapsing. It's way more frantic than Slay the Spire because you aren't hunting for a perfect mathematical turn; you're just praying you can type fast enough before you die.

Run variety is decent for Early Access, and the meta-progression keeps you hooked as you unlock more of the colorful monster cast. However, it's not all smooth sailing. Being in Early Access, the difficulty spikes are jagged and some typing prompts feel clunky. At $8.99, it's a fair price for the gimmick, but you're definitely paying for a work-in-progress. It's less about surgical precision and more about the adrenaline of a race against time.

Verdict

Grab this if you want a fresh, frantic deckbuilder and can type fast under pressure. If you prefer slow, methodical strategy or hate the jank of Early Access, you should probably wait for a full release. 7.5/10.
