Gameplay
First things first: don't let the name trick you. It's not actually chess. You're a 'Player' in a ruined world, scavenging for strong survivors and tossing them into a meat grinder to see who lasts. The core loop is a dark fantasy autobattler mix with roguelike elements. You aren't fighting a lobby of seven other people like you do in TFT or Battlegrounds; it's a single-player expedition where you fight the environment and bosses. It's more about the RPG and loot side of things than out-drafting a human opponent.
What really clicks is the customization. You aren't just picking units; you're managing gear and talents to tweak how your squad fights. The replay value is driven by NG+ cycles. You'll clear the first area, hit some bosses, and then realize you can dive back in to actually make your team viable. It's got that classic 'just one more run' vibe that keeps you hooked.
Since it's a demo from Sublime Studio, it's definitely rough. The UI feels clunky and it lacks a triple-A polish. It's very pixel-art heavy and leans hard into gore. If you're looking for a smooth, polished experience, you won't find it here. It's a gritty indie project that requires you to put up with some jank in exchange for the atmosphere. Plus, be ready for a bit of a grind to get your squad where they need to be.
