What is Hard Count?

A clever, grid-based football deckbuilder that trades simulation for puzzle-like synergy.

Imagine if Slay the Spire happened on a football field. Hard Count is a weird, addictive mashup that turns gridiron strategy into a deckbuilder, and it actually works.

Gameplay

You aren't just building a deck here; you're building a roster. You've got five positions—QB, RB, TE, WR, and OL—and you slot these player cards onto a grid to execute plays. The loop is tight: you place your players, generate points, and push the ball down the field to score a touchdown. It's basically a spatial puzzle with a football skin. The real hook is the synergy. You'll hunt for nearly 100 pieces of equipment across five rarity tiers to buff your squad. When you trigger a 'play evolution,' you can basically cheat the grid rules, which feels incredible.

It's not as numbers-heavy as Monster Train, but the grid adds a layer of strategy you don't see in your average card game. That said, it's an indie title from Goin' Yumbo Games and it's still got some rough edges from its Next Fest cycle. The balancing is swingy. You'll either breeze through a drive or hit a defensive brick wall that feels impossible to crack. At $6.99, it's a cheap entry point, but you're paying for a niche experience that doesn't try to be a full simulation. It's all about that 'just one more drive' energy.

Verdict

“If you are a football fan and like Balatro this is a pretty good game, my only gripe is there seems to be too much randomness to fully plan out what you are doing, but you can mitigate to some extent,…”

Grab this if you want a fresh, niche roguelike and don't mind some balancing swings. If you hate RNG or want a hardcore football sim, skip it. 7.5/10.
