What is Star Realms?

A free, high-speed space combat dueler where faction synergies and a randomized market make every match a different puzzle.

If you're hunting for a deckbuilder that ditches the moody atmosphere for pure, aggressive competition, Star Realms is a classic you can't miss. You'll build a galactic fleet from scratch and tear through your opponent's defenses in a high-stakes battle for space supremacy.

Gameplay

You're basically a space commander starting with a trash deck of Scouts and Vipers. Your goal is simple: buy better ships from a shared Trade Row and blast your opponent's base into dust. The loop clicks when you stop buying the strongest card and start hunting for faction synergies. If you play two cards from the same clan, like the Trade Federation, you unlock 'Ally' abilities that turn a mediocre turn into a powerhouse engine. It's a puzzle of maximizing output every single single turn.

Run variety is high because that Trade Row is randomized. You can't just stick to one meta build; you've gotta pivot based on what's actually available. Meta-progression is lean here. You aren't unlocking stats or gear; it's all about your own skill growing as you learn the card interactions. If you like the buy-and-build tension of Slay the Spire but want to fight a human instead of a monster, this is the spot. It's fast, aggressive, and lean.

That said, it's not all smooth sailing. The digital version feels a bit dated and clunky. Since it's free, you aren't risking money, but the lack of integration between physical expansions and the app is a real pain. You can't just scan a QR code to get your physical cards in the game, meaning you're stuck with the base set unless you pay for digital versions. It's a bit of a rough edge for a game that's otherwise a total powerhouse for competitive play.

What Players Say

Fans love the strategy depth and call it 'addictive', but the community is split on the execution. Some players claim the medium AI cheats and find the matchmaking poorly balanced. The campaign is a major point of contention, with some calling it 'a frustrating joke' and nearly impossible to beat. There's also a loud demand for QR codes to link physical expansions to the app, as the current version feels limited without them.

Verdict

“The campaign is a frustrating joke. Chapter 1 part 4 and it is impossible. I played the card version and never had these issues even with the dude that cheated. It is beyond frustrating from a game I really want to enjoy. I am so very disappointed. I have even had others try to play it and they can'”

“you get to scratch your itch... however, it would be nice if they were to add a qr code on the game and expansions that we buy physically so that we can get them in the app as well... otherwise, it is just the base game and not even the full campaign, which btw, is one of the cool parts of the app. ”

Grab this if you want a fast, competitive dueler with a 91% rating and zero entry cost. Skip it if you're looking for a polished single-player campaign or a modern UI. It's a brilliant game trapped in a slightly clunky app.
