What is Renz Tower Defense?
If you're craving a quick TD fix without any fluff, Renz Tower Defense might hit the spot. It's a stripped-down, minimalist strategy game that focuses on the raw essentials of wave defense.
Gameplay
You'll jump straight into a very traditional loop: place towers, kill enemies, collect cash, and upgrade. It's a minimalist experience, which is basically dev-speak for 'it's very basic.' You've got Basic towers for the early game, Rapid towers to handle the crowds, and Heavy towers for the tanks. It doesn't try to reinvent the wheel; it just gives you the wheel. If you've played Kingdom Rush, you'll notice this is missing that level of polish and personality. There aren't any hero units or complex pathing tricks to play with here. It's a pure, functional experience, but it's definitely derivative.
Since it's in Early Access, the rough edges are everywhere. The dev admits that 'visuals and UI may be placeholder,' and he's not lying. You'll run into jank in the menus and a bare-bones aesthetic that feels unfinished. At $7.99, it's a bit of a gamble for a game that feels like a proof of concept. The balance is still a work in progress, so don't expect a perfectly tuned challenge. It's fast-paced and gets the job done, but it lacks the depth to keep you hooked for long. I'm giving it a 5/10 right now. It's a decent starter kit, but it needs more meat on the bones to actually stand out from the crowd.
