First Impressions: Project - Labyrinth Demo

A weird, gothic dungeon crawler that replaces standard card attacks with high-stakes Italian blackjack and real-time parrying.

Look, if you're tired of the same old 'play card, deal damage' loop, you've gotta check out the Project - Labyrinth demo. It's a weird, gothic mashup that treats your deck more like a gambling hand than a spellbook. It's definitely not for everyone—it's got some rough edges—but it's one of the most experimental things I've played in a while. You're basically betting on your own survival in a haunted dungeon, and it's a trip.

Gameplay

You're playing as the Death Dealer, bound to a sentient sword called the Rogue Queen, navigating a grid-based dungeon. The core loop isn't your typical 'play a card to attack' setup. Instead, it uses a blackjack-style system based on Sette e Mezzo. You're managing card values to execute skills, and the real tension comes from trying to hit high-value plays without busting. It's a total brain-bender at first, but it clicks once you find synergies that manipulate the math of the game.

Combat isn't just about the cards, though. You've got to handle real-time parrying, which adds a layer of chaos you won't find in something like Slay the Spire. If your timing is off, the deck won't save you. The exploration is moody, backed by a Chopin-style soundtrack that fits the gothic vibe perfectly.

Since this is a demo, you're limited to Act 1, so the meta-progression is light. You aren't just hunting for raw power; you're looking for cards that change how the gambling mechanics work. It's not as seamless as Balatro, but it's way more experimental with how it blends genres.

Just be warned: it's a solo dev project, so it's rough. The UI is clunky and the real-time elements take a while to feel natural. You'll definitely hit some unpolished edges while you're figuring out the mechanics.

First Impressions

This is a killer core idea that's currently held back by a clunky UI. Since it's free to try, you should grab the demo if you're bored of standard roguelikes and want a math-heavy challenge, but skip it if you can't stand unpolished early-access vibes. I want to see the combat flow smoothed out in the full release. 7.5/10.
