What is Forest Explorer?

It’s a rough-around-the-edges tactical deckbuilder that rewards grid positioning, making it a worthy $3.99 experiment for strategy fans willing to learn its quirks.

Stop treating deckbuilders like static card games and start treating them like tactical puzzles. Forest Explorer forces you to plan every step, blending movement and action into a single, gritty turn-based loop that rewards positioning over pure power scaling.

Gameplay

If you’re tired of standing in one spot and spamming cards until something dies, Forest Explorer is exactly what you need. You’re actually moving on a grid, planning your movement and actions in the same turn. It turns combat into a puzzle where you ask, 'can I actually reach the enemy?' instead of just 'what’s my strongest card?'. The loop is solid: pick a class, trek through the woods, and snag Curios and Techniques. You’ll hunt for specific Techniques that make your movement cards trigger damage when you shift positions. It scratches that Slay the Spire power-scaling itch, but the tactical layer makes it feel more like a board game. Just don’t expect polish; the UI isn’t slick, and early-game RNG can be a pain. You’ll hit walls where your deck feels garbage because you took the wrong Curios. It’s rough around the edges, but the core loop clicks hard.

Key Features

  • Tactical grid-based movement combat
  • Curios and Techniques synergy building
  • Class-based exploration progression
  • Strategic action planning per turn

Verdict

Grab it if you like Monster Train’s strategic layering but want something that feels more like an expedition. Skip it if you want a polished, pick-up-and-play experience or if you hate reading tutorials. For $3.99, the hook justifies the bugs, but don’t expect mirror-shine quality yet.
