What is Throne of Shards?

A chaotic, rule-bending dungeon crawler that's mechanically innovative but held back by Early Access polish.

Imagine a dark TCG where the rules of the game change every time you descend a floor. Throne of Shards tosses out the standard roguelike playbook to keep you guessing with a brutal, shifting dungeon experience.

Gameplay

You're diving into a dark fantasy dungeon where the rules aren't set in stone. The core loop is tight: you collect cards, hunt for synergies, and fight brutal battles, but there's a twist. Every single floor rewrites the game's mechanics. One level might flip how you draw cards, while the next messes with your energy or damage calculations. It's a refreshing change from Slay the Spire because you can't just find one broken build and ride it to the finish line; the game literally moves the goalposts on you mid-run.

This forces you to pivot your strategy constantly. You'll find yourself hoarding cards just to figure out how to break the current floor's specific gimmick. That adaptability is where the real dopamine hit lives, making the run variety feel genuine since you're fighting the environment as much as the enemies. Meta-progression exists, but it's definitely not the main draw here. The focus is entirely on the immediate puzzle of the floor you're on.

However, you've got to deal with some serious Early Access jank. At $19.99, it's a bit of an ask for a game that feels this unpolished. The UI isn't slick, and some of the rule shifts feel jarring or straight-up unfair if you hit a bad combination of modifiers. It's a chaotic experiment that's fun when it works, but it's clearly still being hammered out. If you hate feeling like the game is cheating you with a weird modifier, this might grate on your nerves.

What Players Say

The community is split on this one. Some players love the concept and say it 'really scratches the Magic shandalard dungeons' itch, while others are far less forgiving. One frustrated user called it a 'borderline asset flip' and claimed the state of the game is 'completely unacceptable.' Even those who enjoyed it admit it's 'very in development' and difficult to recommend in its current form.

Grab this if you're bored of standard deckbuilders and want a mechanical challenge that forces you to rethink your strategy every ten minutes. If you can't stand Early Access bugs or a clunky UI, wait for a sale or a few more patches. 7.5/10.
