What is The Flesh Beneath?

A gritty, body-horror deckbuilder where you pay for power with your own flesh, offering a tense, unique loop despite its Early Access roughness.

The Flesh Beneath turns your body into currency in a grim card-roguelike where every power-up costs a piece of your soul. You descend into a dark cathedral, severing flesh to fuel your deck, creating a tense loop of desperation and decay. It’s a visceral, body-horror take on the genre that prioritizes atmosphere and sacrifice over traditional mana management.

Gameplay

You step into the shoes of one of thirteen ruined souls, descending into a cathedral that demands a tithe. The hook here is visceral: your currency isn't mana or gold, it’s your own flesh. You sever pieces of yourself to power up, pressing blood-stones into your cards to get stronger. It’s a brutal risk-reward loop that feels way more desperate than Slay the Spire. Every power spike leaves a permanent scar on your character. You’re constantly balancing how much of your body you can give away before you’re too broken to survive the next wave. The synergies are dark, and run variety comes from which specific pieces you decide to sacrifice. It’s gross, it’s intense, and it clicks hard when you find that one devastating combo. But don’t expect polish. It’s Early Access, and the devs admit 'the cathedral is still being built.' You’ll find jank and gaps in the experience. The meta-progression is thin right now because there’s not much long-term unlockable content yet. You’re mostly grinding the same loop with slight variations based on your flesh choices.

Verdict

If you crave a dark, body-horror deckbuilder with a unique sacrifice mechanic, The Flesh Beneath is worth your $6.99 despite its Early Access jank. However, if you need a polished, deep meta-progression or hate gore, wait for the full release. It’s a niche gem with a rough exterior.
