What is Retro Pond?

Retro Pond delivers a surprisingly deep deckbuilding loop through fish mutation and ability-card synergies, but the clunky UI and mid-game grind might test your patience.

Retro Pond is a weird, cozy little vibe that actually hits the deckbuilding itch in a way you probably didn't expect. While you're designing a pond and breeding fish, the real meat is in the mutation and ability system. You aren't just clicking 'breed' and hoping for the best; you're essentially building a deck of traits and ability-cards to personalize your fish. The loop is surprisingly addictive and worth your time if you like that specific kind of cozy chaos.

Gameplay

Don't let the 'pond sim' label fool you. You're not just clicking 'breed' and hoping for the best. You're essentially building a deck of traits and ability-cards to personalize your fish. The loop is surprisingly addictive. You breed fish, discover mutations, and slot in these ability-cards to create synergies. It's not a traditional combat deckbuilder like Slay the Spire, but the logic is the same. You're looking for those broken combos that make your fish absolute powerhouses for the contests. The variety in runs comes from the 70+ rare mutations. You'll spend hours just trying to see what happens when you stack specific traits. It's definitely more of a casual, management-heavy experience than Balatro or Monster Train. You aren't fighting for your life; you're fighting for the perfect specimen. The meta-progression is all about expanding your collection and unlocking more decorations to tweak your environment, which feeds back into how your fish develop. It's not perfect, though. Since it's a smaller indie project from msky-dev, there are some rough edges. The UI can feel a bit clunky when you're digging through menus to manage your fish traits, and the pacing slows down significantly in the mid-game.

Verdict

Grab it if you like pixel art and the feeling of chasing that god-tier fish, but be ready for some UI clunkiness and mid-game slowdown. It's a solid 7.5/10 for deckbuilder fans who want something casual, but skip it if you need tight, high-stress combat loops. At $11.99, it's a fair price for the depth, provided you can tolerate the rough edges of this smaller indie project.
