What is Mahjong Traveler?

It’s a unique puzzle-deckbuilder that rewards patience with satisfying rule-breaking mechanics.

You won't find another game that blends mahjong puzzles with roguelike deck-building quite like this. It’s a cozy, weird gem that makes you feel like a system-breaker rather than just a card slinger.

Gameplay

Mahjong Traveler throws you into a cozy HD-2D roguelite where you trek across the Four Winds Isles to fix broken mahjong rules before the seal in the Sealed Abyss breaks. The core loop is weirdly clever: you draw three tiles, flip one, and walk that many steps. It’s not your standard attack/defend deckbuilder. You’re building a tile bag that manipulates sets and modifiers, turning each run into a puzzle-solving exercise. You hunt for specific cards to break the game's logic, creating synergies that feel like you’re cheating the system. It’s less about raw power and more about resource management and understanding the flow of the board. Meta-progression gives you better ways to manipulate tiles, keeping that 'just one more run' itch alive even when the UI gets clunky. You’ll spend runs trying to 'patch' the rules, and while the learning curve is steep, the satisfaction of finally clicking with the mechanics is real.

Verdict

Grab it if you want something different from the usual attack/defend loop and don't mind a steep learning curve. Skip it if you hate mahjong or need a perfectly polished UI right out of the gate. For $4.99, it’s a fair price for the unique experience, even if it’s not quite at Slay the Spire’s prestige yet.
