What is Dala and the Cursed Forest?

A fresh, mythology-driven deckbuilder where fusing cards lets you transform Dala's form to pivot your build mid-run.

Stop just adding cards to your deck and start fusing them. Dala and the Cursed Forest lets you evolve your character's actual form through a unique cell-stacking system to break a deadly forest cycle.

Gameplay

You're not just adding cards to make numbers go up here. The core loop revolves around Card Fusion, where you combine cards to generate 'Cells'. Once you stack four identical cells, Dala transforms into a new form. This is huge because it lets you pivot your entire build mid-run. If you're hitting a wall with a boss, you don't just pray for a lucky draw; you actively fuse your way into a new identity to survive. It's less about the mathematical perfection you find in Slay the Spire and more about this evolving, experimental identity.

The vibe is great, too. It uses hand-drawn art rooted in Southeast Asian forest mythology that makes the world feel atmospheric and distinct. However, it's still in Early Access, so expect some rough edges. The balance is definitely wonky right now. You'll often find yourself fighting a tug-of-war between playing the card that's right for the current turn and the card you need to hit that fusion goal. It's a friction point that can make the progression feel like a chore if you're not careful.

At $7.99, it's a fair price for an indie strategy title, especially given the unique fusion hook. But because it's still in this early phase, the systems aren't fully polished. You'll spend a lot of time experimenting with combinations to see what actually works, which is the main draw, but the clunky transitions between forms keep it from feeling seamless. It's a gamble on a fresh mechanic rather than a polished experience.

Verdict

This is a must-try for deckbuilder fans who are bored of the same old loops and want something experimental. If you hate clunky balance or unfinished Early Access polish, you should probably wait for the full release. I'm giving the demo a 7.5/10 because the fusion loop is a game-changer, even if the transitions are currently rough.
