First Impressions: apochess Demo
Imagine if you smashed a classic chess board together with a grindy, long-term RPG and turned it into an MMO. That's exactly what the apochess Demo does, trading traditional drafting for gear management and stat builds.
Gameplay
You're basically dropping a standard chess board into a progression-heavy RPG blender. Instead of the drafting chaos you'll find in TFT or Battlegrounds, your focus is on the build. You manage RPG stats and gear for your pieces, and since they fight automatically, the game is all about the preparation. It's an MMO at its core, so you're playing for the long haul rather than just a single match.
The loop is surprisingly addictive because you've got over 80 different things to tweak. Seeing your units get stronger through actual equipment feels way fresher than just bumping up a star-rating. You don't need to be a Grandmaster to win here, but positioning still matters because the units move like chess pieces. Your gear choices and stats ultimately decide if your strategy holds up or falls apart.
Since this is a demo, it's definitely a bit raw. It's not the most polished experience, and you'll feel some of the MMO systems still finding their footing. However, the dev is being incredibly honest about the money side of things. There are no purchases available and zero p2w mechanics, which is rare for this kind of scale. It's a clever twist on the RPG-lite trend, even if the edges are still a little jagged.

It's a weird, slow-burn RPG with a chess skin that's definitely worth a few hours since it's free to try. If you love long-term progression and hate p2w, jump in, but skip it if you need a polished, high-budget experience. I'm looking forward to seeing the MMO systems fully fleshed out in the full release.
