What is Codex Combat?

A refreshing, sigil-based autobattler that trades corporate polish for addictive, experimental spell-crafting.

You know how most autobattlers start feeling the same after a while? Just the same old 'buy unit, place unit, hope for a 3-star' routine. I just stumbled onto Codex Combat and it's actually doing something different. It's not your typical army-builder; it's more like you're crafting a magical nuke in a book. It's got some serious Early Access jank, but if you're bored of the usual suspects, you've gotta check this out.

Gameplay

You've probably played a dozen games where you just drag and drop units, but Codex Combat flips that. Instead of drafting soldiers, you're building a spellbook. You pick one of six heroes—each with their own passives and quests—and spend your run hunting for sigils to slot into your codex. It's basically a deck-builder crossed with an autobattler. You craft a sequence of spells that trigger automatically in PvP fights, and the loop is incredibly satisfying when you finally hit that 'eureka' moment with a broken synergy.

It's not all smooth sailing, though. This is a passion project from a two-man team at Moosecliff Games, and it shows. Since it's in Early Access, you'll run into a clunky UI and matchmaking that's honestly a bit spotty. Unlike the corporate polish of something like TFT, this feels raw. It's less about following a strict meta and more about experimenting with ancient relics and sigils to see what actually works.

Then there's the price. At $7.99, it's a paid title in a genre that's almost always free-to-play. For some, that's a turn-off, but you're paying for a game with a soul rather than a battle pass. The core loop is addictive enough to justify the cost, provided you can stomach the jank. If you're tired of the same old unit-placement loops, the variety here keeps you coming back just to see how far you can push a specific hero's build. I'm landing on a 7.5/10 because the gameplay is great, even if the edges are rough.

Verdict

Grab this if you want a fresh, experimental take on the autobattler genre and don't mind some Early Access jank. If you demand a polished, corporate experience or hate paying for PvP games, you should probably wait for the full release.
