The history

Released in early 1998, Star Wars: Jedi Knight - Mysteries of the Sith served as the first and only expansion pack for Star Wars: Jedi Knight - Dark Forces II. Developed and published by Lucasfilm Games, it extended the narrative of Kyle Katarn, picking up five years after the defeat of Jerec.

The title mattered as a significant technical and content bridge, utilizing the Sith engine's ability to display colored light via 3D acceleration. It expanded the Star Wars gaming universe by introducing Mara Jade, a former agent of the Emperor turned student of Luke Skywalker, who accompanies Kyle to a remote base in the Altyr system.

How it plays

The gameplay loop centers on a new single-player story mode consisting of fourteen new levels. Players engage in combat using four new weapons and five new Force powers, fighting through expanded enemy varieties to advance the plot.

Beyond the campaign, the experience is bolstered by multiplayer enhancements, providing fifteen multiplayer maps for combat outside the primary story missions.

Legacy

Lucasfilm Games continued to produce Star Wars titles, evolving the technical foundations laid by the Sith engine. Mysteries of the Sith remains worth seeking out today for those wanting to experience the early Jedi Knight era and the introduction of Mara Jade into the game's narrative.

What it's worth

Copies surface on the second-hand market from time to time, but listings are sparse enough that there's no reliable price band to quote — check the live search for what's available right now.

How to play it in 2026

Easiest today: GOG or the original disc under DOSBox. Either way the core game is intact.

The expansion was re-released on Steam in September 2009, providing the original single-player story mode and fifteen multiplayer maps.

Verdict

As a focused expansion, it succeeds in augmenting its predecessor with a healthy dose of new weaponry and Force abilities. While it is an add-on rather than a standalone evolution, the addition of colored lighting and new character dynamics makes it a rewarding trip for fans of the series.
