What is Maku?

Looking for a quick hit of chaos? Maku is a budget bullet hell where you dodge swarms and power up to survive. It's a simple survivor-style experience that doesn't ask for much of your time or your brain.

Gameplay

First things first: don't let the tags fool you. If you're coming here looking for a strategic experience where you build a squad and watch them fight, you're in the wrong place. Maku isn't an autobattler at all. It's a budget bullet hell survival game where you're just one single character dodging projectiles and picking up upgrades. You'll spend your time running from swarms of monsters, which is basically just a stripped-down version of the Vampire Survivors formula. You won't find any of the tactical positioning or drafting you're used to in something like TFT. There's no complex synergy to figure out and no strategic layering. You just move your character and hope the weapons you pick up keep you alive as the enemies get stronger. It's pure arcade chaos without the brain-work. You'll find yourself just dodging and slashing, but it lacks any of the satisfying depth that makes the genre actually addictive. Because it's so bare-bones, the loop gets old fast. You're just picking up upgrades to survive an endless swarm, but it feels mindless. There aren't any real decisions that make you feel like a genius, which is a huge letdown if you're used to the high-stakes drafting of Battlegrounds. It's a very simple loop that doesn't offer much beyond the basic thrill of clearing a screen of monsters, and that only lasts for a few minutes before you've seen everything.

Going Deeper

When you look for depth, you'll find almost nothing. The community consensus is spot on when they call it 'too simple' and 'lacking depth.' There's no real progression system that makes you want to come back for 'just one more run.' Since there's no complex synergy to master, you're not experimenting with builds; you're just picking whatever looks strongest. It's just a basic survivor game with zero tactical meat on the bone, making the replay value almost non-existent. You've gotta look at the red flags here. With a peak of maybe two concurrent players, you're basically playing in a ghost town. There's no meta to discuss and no community to learn from. For $2.99, it's a cheap distraction if you've got a few bucks to burn, but it's a total miss for anyone wanting a challenge. I'm giving it a 2/10 because it's cheap, but if you want something that actually challenges your brain, stick to Mechabellum. This one just doesn't have the legs to keep you interested.

What Players Say

The community is split, but most agree it's a basic Vampire Survivors clone. Some players love the cute aesthetics and say it's 100% worth the price, while others find it an inferior version of the formula with too few weapons and stages. You'll find people calling it a solid early access foundation, but be warned that it's clearly unfinished; some users report the game bugs out after you win, forcing you to ALT+F4 just to exit.

“Good fun honestly. Can finish game in ~2h. Plasma girl is OP as hell. One small bug - if you win/finish the game and level up - it bugs out and you cannot exit/continue. Need the good old ALT+F4.”

“This game is great but unfinished, which is no surprise since it's in early access. At the moment I am playing it, there are not that many abilities you can use, and the progress has been a pain becau…”

Only grab this if you want a cheap, mindless distraction for an hour. If you're looking for actual depth or a polished experience, skip it. It's for casual players who just want to see a 'Plasma girl' wreck things without thinking too hard.
