What is HeroTail: Survivors?
Ever wondered what happens when you mash a roguelike with a game of Snake? That's HeroTail: Survivors. You'll build a living chain of fighters and tear through waves of enemies in a weirdly addictive loop.
Gameplay
Imagine if old-school Snake had a baby with an autobattler. That's basically the core loop here: you're moving your lead hero around, recruiting followers who snap onto your tail to form this living chain of fighters. They attack automatically, so your main job is managing the chain and stacking set bonuses to survive the waves. It’s a weirdly satisfying rhythm, though it can start to feel a bit repetitive after a few runs.
One Steam player nailed it: 'It's a lovely little game, basically an enhanced version of oldschool snake.' It’s got that same simple pull, but with way more strategic weight. You’ll spend most of your time deciding which followers to grab and how to build your synergy. It’s definitely borrowing the set-bonus logic from games like Teamfight Tactics or Dota Underlords, but applying it to a moving chain makes it feel fresh.
Every hero has their own attack style and abilities, so you’re constantly pivoting your build based on who you pull. The roguelike elements keep you coming back because no two runs feel identical, and the permanent upgrades give you a reason to grind through the waves again and again.
It’s not all smooth sailing, though. You’ll probably find the interface a bit clunky, and the tutorial doesn’t really hold your hand, so you’re figuring some things out on the fly. There’s also a bit of a grind when it comes to the Max Ritters content; you’ll need in-game currency or real money to unlock the newer heroes. It’s a bit annoying, but since the base game is free, it’s a pill that’s easy to swallow.
Overall, it's a solid 88% in my book for a casual session. It isn’t groundbreaking, but the mix of chain-building and autobattling is addictive enough to keep you hooked. If you want something light that doesn't require a PhD in meta-gaming to enjoy, you'll have a blast with this. Just be prepared for a few rough edges while you're building your ultimate hero chain.
What Players Say
The community is mostly vibing with it, with one player calling it a rediscovery of a lost game formula and another saying it’s refreshing to play something so original. You’ll find people praising the challenging gameplay and the dev's quick bug fixes, though not everyone’s sold. One critic felt it barely hit the quality of a game jam project and said it’s a good thing it’s free because it isn’t worth paying for. Still, most agree the core mechanic is cool and the hero unlocks keep things interesting.
